Pasillo for Orchestra No.4 -Yo-

About this work

This miniature masterpiece is a single, perfectly formed movement capturing the Pasillo’s spirit with rich orchestral color. It unfolds as a poignant narrative of memory and longing, both personal and universal.
PASILLO FOR ORCHESTRA NO.4

The piece begins quietly in C minor with a delicate, fugue-like theme evoking the traditional Pasillo guitar. The introduction smoothly transitions into the Pasillo’s soulful heart. The full strings transform an oboe melody into a sweeping, romantic cantabile. The rich, yet transparent, late-Romantic harmonies allow the elegant theme to express intense yearning and sophisticated nostalgia.

A central episode shifts the melancholic mood, providing a brief, essential ray of sunlight in a brighter key. The lighter orchestration features a tender, transparent woodwind dialogue, a moment of fond recollection.

The main theme returns, gaining greater emotional weight as the full orchestra reaches the work’s emotional apex with a richer, impassioned sonority. The triumph is fleeting. A beautifully crafted coda unwinds the music; the tempo slows, dynamics soften, and texture thins, returning to the quiet introspection of the opening. The work dissolves into a final, hushed C minor chord, leaving the listener in profound contemplation..

The Collection

My orchestral Ecuadorian music is the culmination of a process of internalizing folk music. To me, the orchestra is the grand medium for conveying the deepest sentiments of the self or portraying the experiences, individual or collective, of a group of humans. My orchestral pasillos possess a touch of knowledge, a hint of artistry, a dash of technique, and an abundance of heart.
